Global AI Industry Takes Hit Amid Safety Concerns
The global AI industry took a hit on Monday as top leaders warned of a potential slowdown in development due to safety concerns. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, called for a deliberate and global slowdown in AI development, citing risks such as the possibility of AI becoming capable of leading a swarm of agents that could take over the entire internet within six to 12 months.
Nvidia, whose profits have soared due to its chips helping train AI models, sank 3.4% and was the heaviest weight on the market. Other AI-related stocks such as SpaceX, Softbank Group, and OpenAI also took a hit, with Softbank losing 10.7% in Tokyo.
However, not all companies were affected by the decline, as several software companies that had previously fallen due to fears of AI-powered competition rose instead, including Intuit, Autodesk, and Adobe.
