Global Cyber Defense Push Launched Against AI-Powered Threats

More than 100 companies have joined forces to strengthen global cybersecurity defenses in response to the growing threat of AI-powered cyberattacks. OpenAI has published an open letter signed by prominent tech and cybersecurity firms, including Anthropic, Microsoft, Google, Amazon Web Services, CrowdStrike, Cisco, Cloudflare, and Palo Alto Networks.

The letter warns that increasingly capable artificial intelligence could soon make cyberattacks more widespread and sophisticated. The signatories argue that organizations have a limited window to improve their defenses before AI-enabled attacks become more advanced.

Critical infrastructure, including hospitals, water treatment facilities, and the systems that underpin the internet, are particularly vulnerable. The letter states that 'longstanding bugs, excessive permissions, misconfigurations, insecure and unpatched software, weak authentication, and technical debt in legacy systems have left systems exposed.'

The group is urging organizations to use AI as a defensive tool, arguing that it can make cybersecurity work faster, cheaper, and more accessible. This could include using AI to identify and fix vulnerabilities, continuously test defenses, and help security teams respond to incidents.
