Gmail's Secret Storage Hog: Thousands of Large Emails
Google Drive storage can fill up quickly, but it's easy to overlook emails as the main culprit. Pankil Shah, a freelance writer and MakeUseOf contributor, recently discovered that his Gmail account was taking up more than one-third of his available storage space.
With 15GB of free storage, it's tempting to think that emails are negligible compared to photos and files. However, thousands of emails can add up quickly, especially when attachments are included. Bank statements, invoices, earnings reports, and other large files can collectively take up gigabytes of space.
To clear up the issue, Shah used Google Drive's built-in cleanup tool to suggest deleting emails with large attachments. He also manually searched for large emails using a custom search term and deleted them. This freed up a decent chunk of storage space, but Shah knew he had to take further action to avoid future problems.
To manage subscriptions effectively, Shah recommended unsubscribing from unwanted newsletters and promotional emails in Gmail's Manage Subscriptions tab. He also advised blocking senders who don't appear on the list, which will automatically direct their future emails to Spam. This approach not only helps free up storage space but also reduces clutter and annoying warnings.
