Goldman Sachs Bets Big on Bitcoin Volatility
Goldman Sachs has made significant moves in the cryptocurrency market by acquiring NEOS Investments for up to $2.25 billion. This acquisition brings Goldman's assets under management in option-based ETFs to a total of $80 billion, making it one of the largest institutions in this field globally.
The fund in question is BTCI, which holds Bitcoin spot products and sells call options against its holdings. BTCI has an asset management scale of $1.11 billion and distributes earnings to fund holders every month. The fund's high volatility allows it to generate substantial premiums, currently yielding $7.75 per share monthly, equivalent to an annualized return of 27%.
However, this investment strategy comes with risks, as the fund can still expose investors to losses from sharp declines in coin prices. Goldman Sachs is not the only institution exploring ways to capitalize on cryptocurrency market volatility; other major players such as JPMorgan and Fidelity are also getting involved.
The demand for income-generating strategies has led to a surge in the total scale of derivative income ETFs, which now stands at approximately $180 billion. This growth is expected to continue with an annual growth rate exceeding 70% since 2021. The market's enthusiasm for these products is evident, with $7 billion flowing in just last month.
