The banking landscape is constantly evolving due to changing interest rates, capital markets activity, and economic conditions. Two of Wall Street's heavyweights, Goldman Sachs Group (GS) and Citigroup (C), are adapting in different ways.

Goldman Sachs has been focusing on high-margin businesses such as investment banking, trading, and wealth management under CEO David Solomon. The company has been reshaping its portfolio through targeted acquisitions and divestitures, with a recent agreement to acquire LCN Capital Partners strengthening its asset and wealth management business. Goldman also acquired Innovator Capital Management in April 2026, enhancing its active ETF capabilities.

Citigroup, on the other hand, is undergoing a sweeping restructuring under CEO Jane Fraser to simplify its global footprint and improve profitability. The company has completed exits from non-core consumer banking operations in nine countries since announcing plans in April 2021. Citigroup expects revenues to grow at a 4-5% compound annual rate through 2026 and targets a return on tangible common equity of 10-11%. The bank is also investing $5 billion between 2026 and 2028 to drive efficiency and revenue growth.

In terms of valuation, Goldman Sachs is trading at a higher price-to-earnings ratio (14.58X) compared to Citigroup (10.68X). However, the latter's stock has been more stable in recent years, with both companies experiencing significant growth. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for GS and C indicates 34.2% and 40.5% earnings growth in 2026, respectively.
