Good Samaritan Dies After Helping Crash Victims in West Nyack

A Good Samaritan who stopped to help after witnessing a car crash in West Nyack has died, according to the Clarkstown Police Department. The man, identified as a 43-year-old resident of Maybrook in Orange County, was pronounced dead at the scene on July 28. He had approached the edge of a retaining wall after hearing the injured driver calling for help and accidentally fell down the embankment.

The crash occurred near Home Depot on Palisades Center Drive around 1:20 a.m. when a green Toyota Camry left the roadway, striking a guardrail and crashing through a fence before overturning onto its side.

Both occupants had exited the vehicle before police arrived, but the driver was found injured beneath the retaining wall. Responding officers and members of the West Nyack Fire Department safely rescued the driver and located the Good Samaritan's body below.

The 18-year-old female driver from Carmel was treated at the scene and transported to a hospital for evaluation. She was later arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated (misdemeanor) and additional New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law violations related to the crash.
