Google has bolstered its AI capabilities by absorbing key talent from Mechanize Inc., an AI startup focused on improving coding performance. The move sees over a dozen former employees of Mechanize join Google, including co-founder and former CEO Tamay Besiroglu, who now works as a research scientist at DeepMind. The deal, reportedly worth more than $1.5 billion, includes the acquisition of Mechanize's technology and staff.

DeepMind will use the expertise to sharpen its coding and chatbot capabilities, specifically in the area of mid-training, a critical stage in chatbot development. This marks another significant investment by Google in AI talent, following deals worth $2.4 billion and $80-90 million for Windsurf's technology and Contextual AI researchers, respectively.

Google's growing investments in AI talent come as the company faces increasing competition in the field. Despite downplaying talent-war concerns last year, CEO Sundar Pichai acknowledged that Google remains focused on acquiring top AI talent to stay ahead of the curve.
