Google Acquires Mechanize for Over $1.5 Billion in AI Talent Deal
Google has completed its acquisition of Mechanize, a San Francisco-based AI startup, for more than $1.5 billion. As part of the deal, Tamay Besiroglu, co-founder and former CEO of Mechanize, is joining Google DeepMind as a research scientist.
Mechamize's technology focuses on improving how AI models perform coding tasks, an area where Google has faced challenges. The acquisition gives Google access to experienced researchers and technology expertise in this critical area of competition between AI companies.
The deal is part of Google's strategy to boost its AI efforts through talent acquisitions. Last year, Google brought in talent from AI coding startup Windsurf, with its former CEO, Varun Mohan, taking a leadership role in Google's agentic coding program.
