Google Agrees £260 Million Settlement with UK App Developers
Google's parent company has proposed a £260 million settlement to address allegations that UK app creators were subjected to high fees on the Play Store.
A hearing at the UK's Competition Appeal Tribunal in September will determine whether to finalize the agreement. Legal representative Damien Geradin noted, 'This would be the largest payout since the UK's 2015 class action rules for competition cases took effect.'
Eligible app developers are those based in the UK who offered paid digital content via the Play Store starting August 2018.
The settlement highlights mounting international pressure on major tech firms regarding their app marketplace fee models. Though the financial effect on Google's parent company is minor compared to its overall revenue, the outcome may encourage comparable legal challenges elsewhere.
