Google Agrees to $700 Million Settlement Over Android App Control

Google has agreed to a $700 million settlement in Washington state over allegations of excessive control over Android app distribution and other issues. The agreement requires Google to change its business practices, including allowing app developers to use alternative payment systems and inform customers about lower prices outside the Play Store.

The lawsuit was filed by nearly every US state, including Washington, D.C., in 2021. As part of the settlement, $13 million will be distributed among 2.4 million eligible consumers in Washington state. The funds will be paid out through PayPal or Venmo, with most consumers not needing to fill out any paperwork.

Each of the estimated 2.4 million recipients in Washington will receive around $5.40. This amount is based on the assumption that those without PayPal or Venmo will file a claim to obtain their refund.
