Google AI Veteran Noam Shazeer Joins OpenAI Amid AI Talent Surge
Noam Shazeer, Google's Vice President of Engineering and co-lead at Gemini, is leaving the company to join OpenAI. The move was announced on Wednesday, with Shazeer confirming it on his X account.
Shazeer will take on a key role in leading architecture research at OpenAI, focusing on the company's core structural blueprints for future AI generations. He co-invented the Transformer architecture and pioneered foundational AI systems, indicating significant implications for brands and marketers.
Before rejoining Google's AI initiative in 2024, Shazeer co-founded Character.AI, a startup acquired by Google for $2.7 billion. At OpenAI, he will be working alongside CEO Sam Altman, who welcomed him with enthusiasm.
