Google Aims to Cut Aviation Emissions by 40% with AI-Powered Contrail Avoidance
Google is teaming up with airlines to test a pilot project that aims to reduce the impact of global warming by approximately 40%. The initiative, called 'Project Contrails,' uses AI-powered predictions to identify areas where contrails are likely to form and allows air traffic controllers and pilots to plan fine-tuning to bypass those areas. According to Google, avoiding contrails is a simple matter of making slight adjustments to altitude to avoid cold, humid areas.
The project has progressed to field trials in the Americas, North Atlantic, and Asia-Pacific regions, with Cathay Pacific Airways being the first Asian company to partner with Google. The airline conducted operational trials involving more than 100 flights across its network, finding that over 80 flights successfully followed contrail avoidance routes.
Google estimates that these flights reduced the warming effect of contrails by approximately 40%. The company plans to expand its partnership with Cathay Pacific Airways to conduct larger-scale test flights and partner with Contrails.org, a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing contrails.
