Google and Cathay Pacific Join Forces on Contrail-Avoiding AI Tech
Cathay Pacific and Google are teaming up to reduce contrails, which contribute significantly to aviation's climate impact. The partnership involves trialing AI-powered contrail avoidance technology on Cathay Pacific flights, with over 100 routes tested so far.
The trial has already shown promising results, with Google estimating a 40% reduction in the warming impact of contrails for flights that followed contrail-avoidance routes. This is particularly significant for the Hong Kong-Singapore corridor, where persistent contrails often form and can trap heat in the atmosphere.
According to Lawrence Fong, Director Digital and IT at Cathay Pacific, 'Aviation needs solutions to address climate change, and AI is accelerating that progress.' The partnership aims to generate a robust operational data set to inform future industry best practices on contrail avoidance.
