Google and Cathay Pacific Test AI-Powered Contrail Avoidance Technology
Cathay Pacific and Google have partnered to test AI-powered technology that helps airlines avoid conditions leading to persistent aircraft contrails, which contribute to atmospheric warming. The trial, conducted across Cathay Pacific's flight network, aims to reduce the climate impact of aircraft trails.
The AI system combines predictive models, satellite imagery, and weather data to forecast areas where aircraft are likely to form contrails. Flight dispatchers and pilots can adjust an aircraft's altitude and route based on these forecasts. The technology is integrated into Cathay Pacific's Electronic Flight Folder, providing real-time operational information.
The trial covered more than 100 flights across the airline's network, with Google estimating a 40% reduction in contrail warming impact. Not all targeted flights participated due to factors like airspace and payload restrictions. Early analysis found that small altitude adjustments could prevent contrail formation, particularly on routes such as Hong Kong-Singapore.
The partnership between Cathay Pacific and Google is focused on non-CO2 climate effects, including contrails. While reducing carbon dioxide emissions remains a primary focus for the airline, this project addresses a separate issue. Future research aims to determine how contrail avoidance could work across different airlines and airspaces.
