Google and Fervo Energy Ink Record-Breaking Geothermal PPA
Fervo Energy and Google have signed a record-breaking power purchase agreement (PPA) for 396 megawatts of enhanced geothermal energy. This deal makes it the largest contract for enhanced geothermal power to date.
The electricity will come from Fervo's Cape Station project in southwest Utah, where an enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) GeoCluster is expected to begin operating in 2028. Google plans to use the carbon-free output to support a potential data center in the state.
The agreement builds on a previous deal between the two companies in June 2024, when Fervo agreed to supply 115 megawatts of clean energy to Google through NV Energy under a Clean Transition Tariff. This new contract gives Google an option to expand its off-take by roughly 600 megawatts, which would bring total contracted capacity to nearly 1 gigawatt by June 2030.
Fervo's CEO and Co-Founder, Tim Latimer, said that this agreement 'reinforces that EGS is ready to power the next generation of computing infrastructure.' Michael Terrell, Head of Advanced Energy at Google, added that 'the next chapter of advanced power generation technology is being written in Utah.'
