Google and Fervo Ink Historic Geothermal Power Deal
Fervo Energy and Google have signed a historic deal for geothermal power, marking a significant step forward in clean energy adoption. The agreement, worth 396 MW, is the largest enhanced geothermal power deal ever recorded, with Fervo's Cape Station project in Utah set to deliver electricity by 2028.
The deal is notable not only for its scale but also for its timing. Geothermal power offers a unique advantage over solar and wind energy: it provides steady, carbon-free electricity that never clocks off. This makes it an attractive option for data centers, which require constant power to operate.
Enhanced geothermal technology, developed by Fervo, borrows drilling techniques from oil and gas to make geothermal power repeatable and scalable. The Cape Station project is a prime example of this approach, with the potential to expand to nearly 1 GW by 2030.
