Google and Meta Slammed for Not Doing Enough to Stop Online Scams
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has expressed concerns about online scams and is urging major tech companies to do more to prevent them. The FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection director, Chris Mufarrige, stated that Google and Meta need to improve their efforts in stopping scammers from reaching consumers through their platforms.
According to the source, online scams are increasingly relying on sophisticated advertising, artificial intelligence, and social media impersonation schemes. Mufarrige declined to discuss any potential investigations involving specific companies but emphasized the FTC's concern about the issue.
The tech giants have made efforts to combat scammers, with Meta removing over 159 million scam advertisements in 2025, and Google blocking or removing over 8.3 billion ads in 2025. However, Mufarrige believes that these efforts are not enough, stating that 'we cannot have an online economy where it is this easy to impersonate somebody.'
