A massive solar-battery project is underway in Arkansas, one that will outpower the state's two nuclear reactors combined. The Steel River Energy Center, developed by Cypress Creek Energy, covers 11,000 acres and has secured $3.5 billion in financing from major global lenders.

The project's initial phases will deliver 1.6 gigawatts of solar capacity paired with 1.9 gigawatt-hours of battery storage. This is dwarfed by the planned third phase, which will push those numbers to 2.45 gigawatts of solar and 2.9 gigawatt-hours of storage.

Google has committed to purchasing 100% of the electricity generated by Steel River's initial phases, citing its growing demand for power due to the artificial intelligence revolution. This marks a significant shift towards renewable energy in the region.
