Google Bets Big on Finnish Nuclear Power and Wind Capacity
Google has announced plans to invest €13 billion in Finland's renewable energy sector by 2028, with a focus on nuclear power and wind capacity. The investment will support the expansion of Google's data centers in Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala, which will power services including Gemini, Search, Maps, and YouTube.
The tech giant has also signed a 22-year agreement to purchase up to half of the electricity generated by one of the units at Fortum's Loviisa nuclear power plant. This marks Google's first nuclear energy deal outside of the United States.
Ruth Porat, Google President and Chief Investment Officer, referred to this initiative as 'BYOP' or 'bring your own power'. The investment also includes new wind capacity, upgrades to Finland's electricity grid, and a 94-megawatt battery system designed to stabilize prices during cold and windless periods.
