Google Bets Big on Finnish Power for European AI Expansion
Alphabet Inc., parent company of Google, has announced its largest investment in Europe to date. The $13 billion commitment will be spent over two years on expanding digital infrastructure and clean energy projects in Finland.
The investment is crucial for supporting growing demand for services such as Search, Maps, and Gemini. Google's AI data centers require enormous amounts of reliable power, and the company is addressing this constraint directly by securing long-term energy costs.
Under a 22-year deal with utility Fortum, Google has agreed to buy up to half the output of one Finnish nuclear plant. This agreement will provide the necessary electricity for Google's expanding AI infrastructure in Europe.
