Google Bids $10M on Spirit's Microsoft Teams Data Archive
Spirit Airlines' demise in May after its second Chapter 11 filing left behind a valuable asset - its Microsoft Teams data archive. Google has agreed to pay $10 million for a slice of this data, outbidding AI recruitment and data firm Mercor's offer of $7.5 million.
The massive archive contains around 500 million Teams chats, 100 million emails, 17 million OneDrive files, and over 20 million SharePoint items. It also includes code repositories holding about 30 million lines of custom software and pricing models, booking curves, crew schedules, and HR records.
Google claims it's not buying customer data, specifically excluding Spirit's 97.5 million passenger profiles and 50.2 million Free Spirit loyalty records from the deal. A third party will strip personally identifiable information from what remains before transfer, with Google covering the cost.
