President Trump signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario 'Lake America' amid his trade war with Canada, which has retaliated with tariffs on various goods. The U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) formally renamed the lake in response to the order.

Google Maps updated its name for U.S. users to reflect the change, citing GNIS as an official government source. However, it kept the original name 'Lake Ontario' for Canadian users and displayed both names for international users.

Critics of the renaming include Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who called it 'like something out of Saturday Night Live.' The Seneca Nation also condemned the move, stating that it violated the terms of the 1794 Treaty of Canandaigua, which established their boundaries as starting on Lake Ontario.
