Google Buys 1M Carbon Credits from Indian Startup Mitti Labs
Google has made a significant commitment to reducing methane emissions in rice farming by purchasing 1 million carbon credits from Indian startup Mitti Labs. The deal, valued at an undisclosed amount, is set to last until 2030 and marks the largest public agreement for methane-reduction credits in this sector.
Mitti Labs uses advanced GeoAI and satellite data to monitor farms in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, incentivizing farmers to reduce methane emissions by shortening rice field flooding periods. This approach not only reduces methane emissions but also cuts water use by about 40% without lowering yields.
This deal supports Google's net-zero emissions goal, which is being challenged by rising emissions from its AI infrastructure. The company leads in search, video, cloud, and AI, with Google Cloud revenue up 82% year-over-year.
