Google Buys Spirit Airlines Data for $10 Million AI Training
Google's Alphabet is buying internal business data from bankrupt Spirit Airlines for $10 million in a deal that highlights the growing demand for real-world enterprise data to train artificial intelligence models.
The data package includes employee emails, Microsoft Teams messages, spreadsheets, calendars, and marketing/operations/productivity data, all de-identified before the sale. No personally identifiable information (PII) is included.
AI models need diverse, real-world data to learn from, and airline operations are a source of considerable complexity. The data will help train tools like Google Workspace AI, which includes Gemini in Gmail, Docs, etc.
The bankruptcy angle is significant: Spirit shut down in May 2026 after collapsing under high debt and fuel costs, making this a classic distressed asset sale. The bankruptcy court will consider approving the deal at a hearing on August 19.
