Google, Cathay Pacific Join Forces on Contrail-Squashing AI Project
Google and Cathay Pacific Airways are teaming up to tackle one of the aviation industry's most pressing climate issues: contrails. These white condensation plumes form when aircraft fly at high altitudes, trapping heat and contributing significantly to global warming. According to Google, contrails account for roughly one-third of aviation's total climate impact.
The project aims to use artificial intelligence to reduce the formation of these contrails. Google and Cathay Pacific are working together to develop a system that can predict when and where contrails will form, allowing pilots to take evasive action.
