Google Commits $2.3M to Oklahoma Water Conservation Efforts
Google is investing millions in Oklahoma water conservation projects tied to its data center operations. The first $2.3 million will fund eastern red cedar removal from central parts of the state.
The investment aims to offset resource consumption at Google's facilities, including the data center in Pryor, which sits within the same river system targeted by the funding. Project planners with the Oklahoma Conservation Commission have selected particularly vulnerable areas within the Arkansas River Basin to maximize the environmental impact of the red cedar removal.
An estimated 150 million gallons of water will be replenished annually as a result of these project activities, according to Suzie Shin, data center sustainability manager for Google. The long-term oversight and maintenance of the project's success will ultimately determine its effectiveness.
