Google Cracks Down on Android App Memory Usage, Device Migration Requirements

Google is implementing new memory usage and device migration requirements for Android apps starting in 2027. The move comes in response to hardware supply constraints affecting device memory availability.

The company aims to reduce app memory usage through per-app limits, which will be enforced on Pixel devices first and eventually rolled out to other manufacturers. Apps exceeding these limits will be slowed down or terminated.

Google Play is establishing performance thresholds across three areas: dynamic memory usage, bitmap memory usage, and optimized DEX code. To meet these requirements, apps must use a tool like R8 for optimization, with at least 25% coverage in shrinking, obfuscation, and other areas.

The new enforcement will start in February 2027, and Google is offering tools and metrics to help developers comply. Non-compliant apps may see reduced visibility on the Play Store.
