Google Cuts Off Software Updates for Older Pixel Phones
Google Pixel phone owners are facing a software update cutoff, as devices older than the Pixel 8 will no longer receive operating system or security updates. According to the official Pixel Phone Help page, the Pixel 5 and its variants will stop receiving updates, including the Pixel 1, 2, 3, and 4, and their XL models and 5G-enabled versions.
The Pixel 5a with 5G is the most recent of Google's now-defunct smartphones, having launched in August 2021. It received software updates until late 2024, meaning it had a lifespan of around three years. In contrast, newer devices like the Pixel 8 and its variants will receive seven years of updates from their launch date.
For owners of older Pixel phones, it's essential to be aware that using a device without regular security updates can increase the risk of being compromised or infected with a virus. If you're unsure whether your phone is still receiving updates, check the official help page for more information.
