Google Data Center Project Sparks Controversy in Pine Island
Democratic candidate Jake Johnson is calling for a moratorium on data center construction in southern Minnesota. He made this announcement ahead of Google's celebration of its proposed Pine Island project, which promises to invest $24 million in the local community.
In an effort to stop data centers from exploiting the region, Johnson outlined four requirements that these projects should meet before gaining approval: keeping bills low, protecting farmland and natural resources, ensuring economic gains are made in southern Minnesota, and ending non-disclosure agreements connected to the projects.
Johnson expressed concerns about water consumption, energy usage, and noise pollution associated with data centers. He also questioned the effectiveness of Google's 'Panther Program', stating that promises like this are only as good as the paper they're written on.
