Google Ditches Assistant for Gemini: A Billion Users to Adapt

Google Assistant, once a staple on millions of Android devices, is set to be phased out in favor of its more advanced counterpart, Gemini. The change marks one of the most significant shifts in mobile software history and will affect nearly a billion users worldwide.

The transition will begin on September 4, 2026, with Google confirming that it will systematically remove Assistant from Android phones, tablets, Wear OS smartwatches, wireless headphones, and phone-projected Android Auto systems over several weeks. This move is not entirely unexpected, given the company's emphasis on generative AI as the future of human-computer interaction.

Gemini has already made its way to other consumer-centric offerings such as Docs and Gmail and has been successful in attracting users, with 950 million monthly active users in recent months. However, some users may find it difficult to adjust to the more conversational style of Gemini, which can sometimes be too chatty for their liking.

Google has acknowledged that this change will introduce a fundamental transformation and has attempted to mitigate concerns by rolling out Gemini Go, a lightweight version built for phones with as little as 2GB of RAM. Devices that don't meet even this bar will continue to use the legacy Assistant for now.
