Google Ditches ChromeOS for Android in Google Meet Hardware Overhaul
Google is transitioning its Google Meet hardware portfolio from ChromeOS to Android. This change aims to deliver features faster, broaden device choice, and increase flexibility for users.
The company is working closely with hardware partners, including Logitech, Neat, and HP Poly, to offer Google Meet-certified devices for spaces of any size. The portfolio is expected to grow as Google works with partners to certify new devices and peripherals.
Several Android devices intended for large spaces are expected to be delivered in 2027. Existing investments in ChromeOS devices are protected, with support timelines remaining unchanged. Recent ChromeOS models will continue to receive security patches, stability updates, and ChromeOS releases through a multi-year transition period, up to September 2030.
Adopting Android offers several benefits, including device variety, enterprise stability, hardware flexibility, and long lifecycles. Google also recently announced videoconferencing device interoperability between Google Meet on Android and Microsoft Teams, allowing users to join meetings across platforms.
