Google Ditches Pixel Thermometer for New Notification Light

The Pixel thermometer feature, introduced on the Pixel 8 Pro and carried over to the Pixel 10 Pro, has been quietly killed by Google in favor of a new notification light called HiLight. This decision has left many users, including writer Dhruv Bhutani, feeling nostalgic for the unique feature.

The thermometer was initially met with skepticism due to its perceived novelty and late introduction during the pandemic era. However, as users began to explore its capabilities, it proved itself to be a practical tool for everyday problems, such as checking body temperature or monitoring appliance temperatures.

Users polled by Android Authority revealed a range of creative use cases for the thermometer, from checking road temperatures before walking the dog to double-checking electronic temperatures. While not used frequently, having a built-in thermometer was 'incredibly useful' when needed.

The Pixel 11 series now replaces the temperature sensor with HiLight, a visual notification system that uses custom color notifications for favorite contacts and provides an indicator light during hands-free interactions. However, many users feel this is a step backward in terms of utility, particularly considering the placement and software limitations of HiLight.

The removal of the thermometer marks another instance of Google abandoning unique hardware features, which were often met with controversy but contributed to the Pixel lineup's distinct personality.
