Google Drops €13 Billion on Finnish AI Infrastructure
Google has announced a massive €13 billion investment in Finland's AI infrastructure over the next two years. This significant commitment includes digital infrastructure, clean energy projects, and economic partnerships to support its expanding services like Search, Maps, and Gemini.
The investment is Google's largest single investment in Europe, with an initial construction phase in 2027 and 2028 expected to create more than 37,000 jobs nationwide. The project is expected to contribute €3.6 billion annually to Finland's GDP.
Google has been present in Finland for 15 years, having converted a former paper mill into a data centre. The company says it has supported over 600 Finnish suppliers and contributed to the local economy since its inception.
The investment will also support environmental projects around its facilities, including regenerating native forests and wetlands, and creating accessible recreational trails and public saunas. Google's existing Hamina data centre uses seawater-based cooling, while an offsite heat-recovery arrangement distributes recovered heat to local homes and businesses.
