Google Drops $15 Billion in Finland for Data Centers and Nuclear Power
Alphabet is making its largest single investment in Europe to date with a $15 billion commitment to Finland. The funds will be used to build three new data centers and expand an existing site, which will create around 37,000 jobs for the project. Construction is expected to start in 2027.
The new infrastructure will support Google's AI projects, including the Gemini chatbot, Google Search, Google Maps, and YouTube. Up to 50% of the power from the Soviet-designed Loviisa Nuclear Power Plant will be used by Google's data centers and other AI infrastructure.
Finland's Prime Minister Petteri Orpo welcomed the investment, stating that it is a testament to Finland's strengths in building responsible AI infrastructure. The project is expected to deliver a boost of €3.6 billion per year to Finland's GDP.
