Google Drops Auto Backup for Drive Desktop to Google Photos
Google Drive for desktop has stopped supporting the automatic backup of photos and videos to Google Photos. This change affects users who relied on this feature, which allowed them to select folders stored on their computer and enable 'Back up to Google Photos.' Now, users must use the 'Back up folders' option directly in Google Photos or upload files manually.
The phase-out of this feature began on June 15, 2026, when users could no longer configure new backup folders through Drive for desktop. Existing folder configurations continued to work temporarily until August 10, 2026, when Drive for desktop officially ended support for Google Photos backup.
Photos and videos that were already backed up to Google Photos remain safe and are not being deleted due to this change. However, users must now manually upload new photos and videos or use the 'Back up folders' feature in Google Photos to ensure they continue backing up.
