Google Dumps Record $15B on Finnish AI Infrastructure
Google is investing at least $15 billion in Finland over the next two years. The investment, which marks the company's largest single bet on AI infrastructure in Europe, will cover data centers, clean energy, and local community projects.
The move builds on Google's history in Finland, where it has operated a data center since 2008. The new investment will expand existing facilities while adding three entirely new ones in Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala. Google expects the construction phase to support over 37,000 jobs across Finland, generating around $3.6 billion annually for the country's GDP.
Once operational, the data centers are expected to employ approximately 7,000 people, with average pay about 24% above Finland's national median wage. The company is also committing €31 million to community programs over four years, including AI training for more than 4,400 workers and new training slots for Finnish students aiming for careers in data centers.
Google has signed a 22-year agreement with Fortum to support the life extension of the Loviisa nuclear plant, which supplies around 10% of Finland's electricity. The company is also adding onshore wind capacity and contracting for a 94-megawatt battery system near its Kajaani site.
