Google Earth Pauses AI Image Generation Amid User Misuse Concerns
Google Earth's AI-powered image generation feature was shut down just one day after its introduction. The tool allowed users to type in text prompts and produce photorealistic images based on existing satellite, aerial, and 3D imagery in Google Earth.
The company cited user misuse as the reason for pausing the feature. According to Google, some users shared screenshots of generated imagery that appeared to violate their policies.
Bryan Horowitz, Product Manager of Google Earth, explained that while the tool had been used by geospatial professionals for legitimate purposes, it was also being misused.
Google did not specify what types of images triggered the policy violations. The company stated that they will work on implementing stronger guardrails to prevent misuse in the future.
