Google Embeds Shopping Ads Directly in AI Mode Conversational Answers
Google is testing new shopping ad placements within its AI Mode results, allowing ads to be embedded directly in the text of conversational answers. According to screenshots published by Search Engine Roundtable on August 31, 2026, sponsored product carousels and single ad units are now appearing between the generated text and follow-up questions in AI Mode responses.
The test includes a carousel format with multiple product tiles, as well as a single inline unit with four labelled attributes. The sponsored block is embedded in the answer, rather than being appended to it, and is distinguished from unpaid material by a Sponsored label.
Google did not comment on the observation, but the screenshots show a significant change in ad placement within AI Mode results. This development follows 18 months of expansion into previously unpaid contexts, including the introduction of shopping ads for AI Mode on February 11, 2026, and the inclusion of sponsored tiles in product grids on April 2, 2026.
The competitive context is close, with OpenAI moving a multi-product carousel into ChatGPT during early August 2026. The density of advertising within AI Mode queries has also increased, with nearly 30 percent of ad-eligible queries carrying advertisements, according to Similarweb data published on August 17, 2026.
