Google Enables User Data Porting Between AI Assistants

Google has started allowing users to import their chat history and personal context from other AI assistants into Gemini, its own conversational AI platform. This move is seen as a significant shift in the consumer AI market, where users can now bring their past conversations and preferences with them when switching between platforms.

This process of porting user data is not new to advertisers, who have been using it to gain additional revenue from campaigns. However, Google has taken it a step further by allowing users to import their entire chat history into Gemini, which can then be used to feed high-intent and very personal user data into its advertising ecosystem.

The feature, known as context migration or memory porting, acts as direct command instructions to analyze historical data of past interactions and compress that information into a portable summary. This allows Google's semantic models to map a highly sophisticated, anonymized intent profile that powers hyper-targeted audience segments across Search, YouTube, and Maps.

While this move may provide advantages for brands, consumer trust could become Google's biggest hurdle to the success of this feature once users start to notice the impact on their online experience. As one user allowed it to happen, giving up their data, they may soon suspect that importing their private chat histories will result in hyper-specific ads being shown to them.
