A California federal judge has delivered a mixed verdict in the trial of an ex-Google software engineer, acquitting him on espionage charges while upholding his conviction for trade secret theft. The engineer was accused of intentionally collaborating with the Chinese government to steal Google's trade secrets.

The judge ruled that although evidence presented during the trial showed the engineer's actions were 'ad hoc, disorganized and feeble', it wasn't enough to prove he had colluded with the Chinese government.

This verdict comes after a lengthy trial, which has raised questions about the balance between national security concerns and individual rights in cases involving allegations of espionage.
