Google Exits China from Pixel Hardware Manufacturing by 2027
Google has announced its decision to fully withdraw all Pixel hardware from Chinese manufacturing by 2027. This move makes Google only the second major global smartphone brand after Samsung to exit China for handset production, marking a significant shift in the company's manufacturing history.
The successful completion of New Product Introduction (NPI) for the Pixel 11 flagship in Vietnam is the key factor behind this decision. NPI is a critical phase where a product moves from finalized engineering design to validated mass production, requiring a dense ecosystem of nearby component suppliers. Google has leveraged Samsung's presence in Vietnam, which has invested approximately $23.2 billion in the country and manufactures over 50% of its global phone production there.
India is emerging as the second pillar for Pixel manufacturing under a two-hub model, driven by a 20-percentage-point tariff advantage over Vietnam for devices destined for the American market. Google has held discussions with Foxconn and Dixon Technologies as Indian manufacturing partners, with India handling volume production for markets where the tariff advantage applies most forcefully.
