Google Expands AI Overviews on Search Queries

Google is expanding its AI Overviews on some search queries, making them more prominent in search results. Previously, AI Overviews were placed above traditional search results and provided an AI-generated answer to a query, with links from around the web included within the response.

Now, for certain searches, these overviews will automatically expand to take up the entire screen, essentially turning the page into an AI-driven response. This change was first spotted by Chris Long and confirmed by Google in a statement to Search Engine Roundtable.

The company claims that this dynamic experience has shown users find search more helpful and encourages deeper exploration of follow-up topics. An example of where this happens consistently is with definitions, where AI Overviews take up the entire screen.
