Google Expands AI Overviews, Sparking Publisher Backlash
Google is expanding its AI Overviews feature in Google Search, displaying more detailed and extensive AI-generated content for select searches. This move has been met with criticism from publishers who claim that the feature is negatively impacting their affiliate revenue. In May 2024, Google began rolling out AI Overviews, which dynamically expand to provide users with a summary of their search query.
According to reports, some users are now seeing full AI responses for certain searches, similar to what they would see if they enabled AI Mode. The 'Show More' button has been removed in some cases, pushing the familiar blue links further down the page.
Publishers have expressed concerns that the feature is scraping their content to produce AI summaries, which take up a significant amount of space on the page. In September, Penske Media sued Google over the feature, alleging it was negatively impacting its affiliate revenue. Google has confirmed the move but stressed that the changes will not apply to all search queries.
Robby Stein, Google's VP of Product for AI Search, stated that 'AI Overviews only dynamically expand for topics where our systems determine it to be most useful.' He also noted that the company is continuously testing and refining these experiences based on user feedback.
