Google Expands D.C. Presence with Major Office Lease
Google is expanding its presence in Washington, D.C. by signing a lease for office space at 500 North Capitol Street NW. The tech giant plans to consolidate multiple other offices in the area into this single location. According to reports, Google was angling for most of the 231,000-square-foot building.
The company's move reflects its commitment to working with the government and investing in the D.C. community, according to a statement from Google executive John Connell. Azora Private, the majority owner of the property, did not comment on the deal. The construction of interior space is expected to take several years.
This lease marks one of the year's biggest deals in the area and suggests that Google has pivoted from its previous space-cutting strategy. In recent months, the company has been expanding its presence in other cities as well, including Sunnyvale, California, where it leased 2.1 million square feet of office space. Alphabet also quadrupled its Miami office space to approximately 45,000 square feet.
