Google Expands Israeli Presence with New AI Chip Development Team
Google is expanding its presence in Israel by establishing a new team focused on developing artificial intelligence chips for edge devices. The US tech giant has hired Guy Kaminitz, former vice president of R&D at Hailo, to lead the initiative as silicon engineering head. According to Kaminitz's LinkedIn post, Google is building a 'world-class engineering group' from scratch in Israel.
The new team will focus on developing AI chips for network edge devices such as robots and autonomous systems. Edge AI processors enable applications to run directly on devices rather than in the cloud, powering various technologies like IoT, AR/VR, and security devices.
Google has had R&D activity in Israel since 2005, with teams working on machine learning, AI, natural language processing, and machine perception challenges. The company recently acquired cybersecurity unicorn Wiz for $32 billion, its largest-ever purchase of an Israeli-founded tech firm.
