Google Expands Subsea Cable Network Across Americas
Google has announced three new subsea cable systems in the Americas as part of its Americas Connect initiative. The cables, Alisios, Canoa, and OlaLuz, will connect Chile, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Bermuda, Florida, and beyond.
The cables are named after regional maritime traditions: Alisios is Spanish for trade winds that blow across the tropics and the Caribbean, while Canoa comes from the Taíno word for canoe. OlaLuz combines the words for 'wave' and 'light', referencing the data that flows through the cable.
The new cables will complement Google's existing subsea infrastructure in the region, which includes links between North America and Bermuda to Europe. They are expected to create highly resilient and diverse routes across the Pacific Coast, Caribbean Sea, and Atlantic Ocean.
Google has invested heavily in subsea cables over the past 15 years, developing multiple cable landing stations and 'connectivity hubs' across various locations.
