Google Faces Scrutiny Over Fake Gmail Accounts Used for Bomb Threats

Indian police are investigating Google over its handling of fake Gmail accounts used to send bomb threats to government offices. The investigation began after authorities broke up a criminal network that created and managed more than 500,000 fake Gmail accounts since 2022.

The network, which sent 'inter-state' bomb threats, was dismantled by police in Gujarat, India's western state. Two people were arrested and 513,847 Gmail IDs and passwords were uncovered.

Google is facing scrutiny for its Firebase web development platform being exploited for financial scams. The company has not commented on the investigation, but authorities plan to formally designate it as a subject of inquiry soon.
