Google, Fervo Energy Ink Record-Breaking Geothermal Deal for Utah Power
Fervo Energy and Google have announced a significant partnership in Utah to develop enhanced geothermal systems. The two companies signed a 396 MW power purchase agreement, with an option for Google to expand its offtake by approximately 600 MW by June 2030.
The deal is the largest enhanced geothermal agreement to date and will enable the development of carbon-free energy from the Cape Station GeoCluster in Utah. The project is expected to come online in 2028 and unlock new, around-the-clock capacity at no cost to existing ratepayers.
Fervo Energy's CEO, Tim Latimer, stated that this agreement reinforces the readiness of EGS to power the next generation of computing infrastructure. He emphasized the importance of reliable electricity and the need for energy resources that can be deployed at scale, operate around the clock, and deliver where power is needed.
The partnership between Fervo Energy and Google began with Project Red in Nevada, which came online in 2023. The success of this project led to a 115 MW PPA signed in June 2024 that helped pioneer the Clean Transition Tariff.
