Google Gemini Notebook Switches to Compute-Based Usage Limits

Google is revamping its Gemini Notebook service by introducing compute-specific usage limits. This change mirrors the company's recent update to the Gemini app, which implemented similar limitations in May. The new system will replace the previous daily feature generation limits tied to Google AI tiers.

The compute-based usage limits will factor in several variables, including prompt complexity, chat length, number of sources, and features used. This approach aims to provide a more accurate representation of users' actual AI consumption.

Gemini Notebook users can expect to see two new indicators: one tracking their remaining AI usage limit and another showing the expected cost for Studio generations. The system will also suggest alternative outputs if the user's initial choice exceeds their allowed limits, offering a 'Generate later' feature to defer intensive tasks like Video Overviews or Slide Decks.

The new compute-based usage limits are set to begin rolling out on September 2nd to consumer accounts across web and mobile platforms. The different tiers of Google AI will have varying levels of allowance, with Standard limits applying to free/without-a-plan users, 2x higher limits for Google AI Plus subscribers, 4x for those with Google AI Pro, and either 5x or 20x higher for Google AI Ultra subscribers.

Google's intention is to provide a more granular understanding of AI usage, allowing users to better manage their consumption and avoid unexpected costs. However, the specifics of this new system have yet to be fully explored by the community, raising questions about its potential impact on users' productivity and overall experience within Gemini Notebook.
