Google Gives Users Control Over Gemini AI Watermarks
Google has given users control over watermarks on AI-generated content created using its Gemini models. Starting August 14, 2026, users can toggle off the visible watermark on images, videos, and songs generated with Gemini. However, invisible SynthID marks and C2PA metadata will remain embedded in the files.
According to Josh Woodward, Google's vice president for Gemini, this change is a balance between creative control and safety. The invisible watermarks are still used for transparency, allowing users to verify if an image was AI-generated using Gemini or Search.
Google is also open-sourcing Credentio, a library that lets developers check content credentials inside their own apps. This move allows users to opt-out of the visible watermark while still maintaining the integrity of the content's provenance trail.
